Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can.

CSI Wesley Tamil Church History

The C.S.I Wesley Tamil Church is situated in St. Thomas Mount where Saint Thomas, disciple of Jesus Christ was martyred in first Century. CSI Wesley Tamil Church Congregation traces its origins to the early 19th century, when Methodist missionary Rev. James Lynch arrived in Madras in 1817. By 1819, Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society (WMMS) had established a Tamil school in St. Thomas Mount, which served as a foundation for Christian ministry in the area. Tamil preaching & worship began soon after, with missionaries like Rev. Elijah Hoole and Rev. Titus Close regularly preaching to both Tamil and English-speaking congregations. The early years saw the use of school buildings and temporary spaces for worship before a formal church was built.

In 1829, a Wesleyan Chapel was constructed on land donated by Mrs. Isacke to serve both English and Tamil congregations. Tamil services grew steadily through the early years supported by Methodist Ministers travelling from Royapettah/George Town and by trained local preachers. In 1860, Rev. Josiah Evers was appointed by Methodist Mission as a residential Tamil Preacher. The Methodist mission emphasized education, opening schools for boys and girls, and establishing a girls’ home, teacher training center, and medical services. The Tamil congregation played a vital role in village evangelism and supported several mission fields around Chennai.

After years of worshiping in shared spaces, the Tamil congregation built its own church in 1935, under the leadership of Rev. P.J.S. Appadurai. This distinct building included a Greek Orthodox-style dome and became the home of Tamil Methodist Christians. With the formation of the Church of South India (CSI) in 1947, the church became part of the CSI Madras Diocese and continued its vibrant ministry.

The church has since grown to over 550 families and more than 1,800 members. It remains active in spiritual, educational, and social outreach, including building a branch church in Vellavedu village. In 2025, the church building was renovated and expanded by Rev. G. Wellington Jesudoss with Heritage Grant of Tamil Nadu state government and contribution of congregation, preserving its original architecture while accommodating the growing congregation. The CSI Wesley Tamil Church stands today as a living witness to more than 200 years of Christian faith, service, and heritage in Tamil Nadu.
